One of the prettiest jazz tunes I’ve come across: “Midnight Sun”. Live performance at Reid’s Distillery in Toronto on May 1 2024. Featuring Shraddha Pai on vocals, Nathaniel Edgar on keys, Glenn Anderson on drums, and Jack Zorawski on bass.
This melody was originally written in the late ‘40s by percussionist and bandleader Lionel Hampton and composer/arranger Sonny Burke (Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp”). The lyrics of magical scenes in nature, were written by the prolific Johnny Mercer. Among Mercer’s hits we count beloved tunes such as, “Moon River” (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), “Autumn Leaves”, and the Sinatra hit, “Summer Wind”. To me, the subtle, delicate, unexpected colours this melody creates could come from no other genre but jazz.
