This month’s craft project is an appliqué flag I’m making as part of a neighbourhood art installation for a food bank fundraiser (Daily Flag for DailyBread). I will be blogging as the project progresses to avoid the mega-blog at the end.

Leggings! They pair well with tops, tunics, dresses and skirts. They can be in so many lovely colours. Having sewn mostly woven (non-stretchy) fabric, I wasn’t sure about sewing with a knit fabric that is supposed to have a snug fit. Still the temptation was too much, and I took one of Karyn’s fabulous classes on sewing leggings (at the workroom in Toronto). Well! It was a perfect introduction to sewing knits with the serger and the leggings themselves came together VERY quickly. I managed to come home with TWO pairs of leggings, one for myself and one for my six-year old. And then sewed a pair of orange leggings over a Friday-Saturday, for my daughter’s tiger costume. Score! Four (four!) more leggings will be forthcoming before the cold gets colder: in tan, (two) chocolate, and plum.

Who doesn’t wish they had toys like this as kids? Here are Madame Sow and her nursing piglets, posing for a family shot. They are soft and fluffy, Mrs. Sow serves as a bouncy pillow, and – best of all – Mrs Sow is a birthing and lactating pig.

Here is a design of my own, for a project I finished in sunny August. It was a birthday present for an amazingly athletic woman. This is an example to show that it only takes a basic knowledge of freehand embroidery and a simple design, to turn a creative idea into a product that feels personalized and looks great.
The fabric is plain muslin, and the hoop serves as a frame so the final place can be hung up on a wall. Continue reading Embroidered cyclist
